Solving Challenges on a Critical Interstate

Duininck

Duininck completed an asphalt resurfacing project on Interstate 29 north of Brookings, South Dakota, improving a heavily traveled corridor through Brookings and Deuel Counties. The project required a full closure of the southbound lanes for 11.5 miles, demanding detailed traffic control planning and efficient execution.

Work included cold milling, asphalt resurfacing, guardrail improvements, pipe culvert replacements, ramp detours and widenings, and acceleration and deceleration lane modifications. Multiple work activities occurred simultaneously, requiring close coordination among crews, subcontractors, and the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

Duininck served as the primary asphalt contractor, completing all asphalt surfacing and resurfacing work, along with ramp widening and key lane modifications. Construction took place from May 28 through October 25, 2025, covering 11.54 miles of Interstate 29, or 26 total lane miles.

During construction, sections of existing concrete pavement experienced heat-related expansion, resulting in unexpected buckling. Duininck crews addressed the issue by installing large asphalt repair joints every half mile, completing the work in four lifts and delivering a durable solution despite tight seasonal timelines.
