A busy four-way intersection near Monticello High School and an Education Center required a large-scale reconstruction to improve safety for students, families, and the public.
The project covered approximately two miles and included replacement of the existing intersection with a roundabout, reduction of roadway slope, utility reconstruction, and construction of a 40-foot retaining wall. Duininck’s grading crew began work in late July 2021.
The roundabout portion of the project had a tight 30-day schedule. The crew coordinated planning and execution to meet the timeline while managing a complex scope of work across the full project corridor.
Work began at the southern end of the roadway with milling, followed by placement of sand and gravel in preparation for grading. Approximately 32,000 tons of sand were supplied from Duininck’s Plant 14 in Monticello, located less than five miles from the site, which reduced hauling time and cost.
By early August 2021, crews progressed to sub-grading the northern portion of the road and excavation for the retaining wall footings. The retaining wall required careful coordination and safety planning due to depth and soil conditions.
Paving was completed in early November 2021, and the roadway reopened to traffic.
“When we get a project done, we get to turn around and look at it and say we did that, not me but all of us.”
-Bud Peterson, Grading Crew Lead
“Being able to help finish a project and make it look nice when it’s done is the most rewarding part of the job.”
-Todd Anderson, Operator
Special thanks to subcontractors Northland Concrete and Masonry Co., which completed the retaining wall work, and Hjerpe Contracting, Inc., which handled underground utility construction.
