Duininck recently completed a roadway improvement project along U.S. Highway 81 in Codington and Hamlin Counties, South Dakota. The project focused on improving safety, ride quality, and long-term pavement performance while minimizing impacts to daily traffic along one of the region’s most heavily traveled routes.
Work included culvert repairs and extensions, turn lane construction, asphalt milling, and new bituminous paving. Improvements were completed on both two-lane and four-lane sections of roadway, covering approximately 10.5 miles. Maintaining traffic flow and limiting disruption were key priorities throughout construction.
Duininck served as the prime contractor and was responsible for overall project coordination, scheduling, and execution. Construction began in mid-May and was completed in August, allowing the project to progress efficiently through the summer construction season.
The project held special significance for the crew, as Highway 81 is a route many employees use daily. That pride was reinforced when the project set a new state record for ride smoothness, earning the highest ride quality ever awarded by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
