South Dakota Highway Mill and Overlay

Construction workers operate heavy machinery laying and compacting fresh asphalt on a road. Steam rises from the hot surface, while workers in safety gear oversee the process under a cloudy sky.

Over the course of six weeks, two Duininck crews worked together to prep and pave 16 miles of State Highway 1804 near Pierre, South Dakota.

Mary Siegle, Crew Lead, and her Watertown-based crew began the project with milling and preparation work. Once that phase was complete, Ted Meyer, Crew Lead, and his paving crew followed to pave the roadway and place gravel to finalize the project.

The mill and overlay work used approximately 49,000 tons of asphalt mix from Duininck’s Plant 7. A portion of the roadway crossed the Oahe Dam, which required additional coordination with the state.

“The cooperation between Duininck and the state helped the project move along smoothly. That partnership, along with the effort and attention to detail from the two crews involved, enabled us to complete a high-quality project in a timely manner.”
-Mike Ruether, Duininck Superintendent
